Best. Euphemism. Ever. Thanks again Liz Lemon.

  2. Mantis Shrimp

    December 6, 2008 by pfranzen

Ok, when I think: spectacular killing machine, the term shrimp doesn’t exactly fly into my head but I stumbled across this: The Magnificent, Ultraviolent, Far-Seeing Shrimp From Mars

“They’re enchantingly violent,” he said in an affectionate, almost paternal tone. “They catch other animals by either spearing it through the heart or smashing it to pieces. Unlike most predators that grab prey, these pummel it and destroy it. When they interact with each other over a burrow, they use their armored front appendages and smash each other on the face. Whenever they get into any type of situation, they smash things. You can’t pick these up. They’re really great animals to have around.

Cool (also proving, once again, I’m a ten-year old).

  3. .Tel

.tel domain names – ny times blog

Because the data is stored in the DNS, rather than on a server, when a person updates a phone number or address using their .tel account, it is automatically updated in the address books of their friends who have their .tel information stored on a smartphone or other mobile device.

    Seems kinda noteworthy

    Phone button configs

Turns out, way back in the day AT&T tested a bunch of methods for dialing a pushbutton phone, now THAT would’ve been a fun project.

    The story behind studio logos.

MGM’s motto is: “Ars Gratia Artis” -> “Art for Art’s Sake.”

  6. Bratz indeed

    December 4, 2008 by pfranzen

    So Bratz are wrong now

This begs the question,  this person worked for Matell, came up with a fantastic idea to make a bunch of money (Matell alleges over $700 million), how come Matell wasn’t able to capitalize on the idea while the designer still worked there?

    My Best Guess:

Designer: I’ve got this great idea for a new doll, its kind of provocative…

Matell: Oh I don’t know, shouldn’t you be working on the new hat looks and not thinking too much about product development

Designer: I quit, I’m going to start my own company.

    Matell: pfffff…

    Years later…

Matell: Why are we losing to these people? Let’s sue!

Court: Matell wins! Consumers want this product, they failed to see it until it was too late and they failed to retain an employee who came up with the idea.

Thank God the Sun-Times will be out of business before they have a chance to sue me.

    Chris Pullman: What I’ve Learned

The VP of design for WGBH and Yale professor talks about 10 things he’s learned over the past 35 years. The Skinny:

    1. Work on things that matter.
    2. Work with people you like and respect.
    3. Be nice.
    4. Have high standards
    5. Have a sense of humor.
    6. Design is not the narrow application of formal skills, it is a way of thinking.
    7. Variety is the spice of life.
    8. Institutions have a character, just like people do.
    9. We’re all in the “understanding business.”
    10. You are what you eat.

I wish I was this friggin’ eloquent

  9. Dashboard

    December 2, 2008 by pfranzen

You might notice the little menu / fisheye / dashboardy thing developing toward the tp of my site. I’m planning on keeping little icon links to all my projects / portfolio stuff in there. Which should be expanding on a daily, if not hourly basis.

  10. Yay for blogging!

    December 1, 2008 by pfranzen

This is my blog. I’m intending for it to be a site that I use to document the start of my highly successful web design / development business.
